A blue or green Sport Utility Vehicle or station wagon, often with a spare tire on the back. Commonly used as a generic blue or green car.

Sport Utility Vehicle or SUV is an emoji whose meaning was likely lost in translation as it moved from Japanese phone carriers to the Unicode Standard in 2010.

This emoji goes back to the late 1990s when it was <a href="/docomo/1999/sport-utility-vehicle/">included in Docomo&#39;s emoji set</a>. In 2009, it appeared on a <a href="https://www.unicode.org/L2/L2009/09026r-emoji-proposed.pdf">proposal</a> as one of many symbols available on Japanese phones recommended to be encoded into the Unicode Standard. In that proposal, the symbol was referred to as a &quot;recreational vehicle&quot; or RV. The original Japanese emojis look more like station wagons or SUVs than RVs.

At various points, platforms including Google and Samsung showed this emoji as an RV, but ultimately the designs across platforms converged to a car that looks more like an SUV or station wagon. At a small scale this emoji is barely distinguishable from <a href="/automobile/">🚗 Automobile</a> on some platforms.

Recreational Vehicle

A car&nbsp;shown from the side, facing right-to-left. Appears as a red car on almost all platforms (which <a href="http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/RedOnesGoFaster">goes faster</a>), though earlier Google designs displayed the vehicle as either <a href="/google/android-11.0/automobile/">silver</a> or <a href="/google/android-7.0/automobile/">blue</a>.

Facebook&#39;s first design for this emoji was also <a href="/facebook/1.0/automobile/">blue</a>.

Automobile

A car&nbsp;being shown from the front. The windscreen and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hood_(vehicle)">hood</a> (bonnet in British English) of the car can be seen&nbsp;facing forward.

This car shows in red or blue on most platforms. It was <a href="/google/android-11.0/oncoming-automobile/">previously</a> silver on Android.

Oncoming Automobile

A red or turquoise pickup truck. Used to talk about trucks or modes of transportation in general.

A racing car which appears as a formula one vehicle or&nbsp;rally car on most platforms. Generally displayed&nbsp;in&nbsp;red.

Apple&#39;s version of this emoji features the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swift_(programming_language)">Swift (programming language) logo</a> on the side.

Initially installed&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nttdocomo.co.jp/service/docomo_mail/appli/deco/pictograph/index.html">on carrier handsets running&nbsp;Android 4.3 and 4.4</a>&nbsp;and later discontinued&nbsp;and replaced with <a href="/google/">standard Google emoji designs</a> on&nbsp;phones from NTT Docomo in Japan.

An updated version of the NTT Docomo emoji set <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20070108235809/http://www.nttdocomo.co.jp:80/binary/pdf/service/imode/mail/imode_mail/emoji_convert/pictogram.pdf">first in use in 2006</a>&nbsp;and remaining in use <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20080920215707/http://www.nttdocomo.co.jp:80/binary/pdf/service/mail/imode_mail/function/emoji_convert/pictogram.pdf">until at least 2008</a>. The first emoji set from Japanese carrier Docomo (styled NTT DoCoMo in 1999). One of the most successful early emoji sets due to its use on multiple devices. Designed by Japanese interface designer <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shigetaka_Kurita">Shigetaka Kurita</a>, these minimalistic graphics were used on multiple devices, and evolved to <a href="/docomo/2013/">a vector graphic implementaiton in 2013</a>.

Commonly cited as the first emoji set, it is more accurate to deem this one of the first emoji sets. An emoji implementation from competing Japanese carrier <a href="/softbank/1997/">Softbank predated this set with a 1997 emoji release</a>.
