A microphone, as used for <a href="/radio/">radio</a> broadcasting or studio recording. Most platforms depict a vintage, silver microphone, like the <a href="https://www.soundonsound.com/reviews/75-years-shure-unidyne-55">Shure Unidyne 55</a>.

Commonly used for various content concerning radio, broadcasting, music, recording, and podcasts.

Not to be confused with the handheld <a href="/microphone/">🎤&nbsp;Microphone</a>, associated with live singing.

Studio Microphone

A speaker cone displayed with three sound waves, generally used as an icon to indicate the increasing of volume on a phone or computer.

Used by the Google Chrome browser to indicate which of your browser windows is playing sound.

A music note emoji,&nbsp;which can denote song lyrics, or other music related topics.

Displays as two eighth-notes (quavers in British English) connected with a beam. A single eight-note (quaver) was previously used in <a href="/microsoft/windows-10/musical-note/">Microsoft</a> and&nbsp;<a href="/google/android-7.0/musical-note/">Google&rsquo;s</a>&nbsp;emoji designs.

Musical Note

Three eighth notes (quavers in British English), used to represent music or singing. Sometimes inserted&nbsp;next to&nbsp;quoted&nbsp;lyrics, to make it clear that they are part of a song.

A level slider, as adjusts volume on a mixing console. Most platforms depict a silver and black channel fader with scale markings, set to various levels. Apple and Google&#39;s&nbsp;go&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Up_to_eleven">up to eleven</a>.

Commonly used for various content concerning audio recording and production as well as music more generally. May also be used for figurative senses of level, e.g., next level.

Thanks to its appearance, some may use the emoji to represent a <a href="/latin-cross/">Christian cross</a>.

Four control knobs, as adjust audio levels on a mixing console. Generally depicted as a silver square with black knobs, turned to various levels as indicated by white pointers and scale markings.

Commonly used for various content concerning audio recording and production as well as music more generally.

A microphone, used&nbsp;to amplify a person&rsquo;s voice when speaking or singing.

Previously shown with <a href="/musical-notes/">music notes</a> on most platforms, implying it to be used for a singer / singing.&nbsp;Today&nbsp;only Twitter&#39;s design retains these notes.

Headphones, used to listen to music or other forms audio, such as podcasts.&nbsp;Most platforms display this emoji with large over-ear headphones in shades of black, blue, and gray.

Apple previously displayed&nbsp;this emoji as <a href="/apple/ios-10.0/headphone/" title="🎧 Headphone on Apple iOS 10.0">iconic iPod white earbuds</a>, followed by black&nbsp;<a href="/apple/ios-10.2/headphone/">Beats headphones in 2016</a>, and in 2021 switched <a href="/apple/ios-14.5/headphone/">to display white AirPods Max</a>.

Headphone

A classic portable radio, as used to listen to music, news, or sports. Depicted in various colors and styles with a <a href="/speaker-low-volume/">speaker</a>, antenna, dial, and knobs.

Commonly used for various content concerning radio, broadcasting, and music.

Radio

A silver <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optical_disc">optical disc</a>, as a CD or <a href="/dvd/">DVD</a>, used to play music or movies before the rise of streaming technology. Commonly used to represent CDs, DVDs, Blu-rays, and related film and music content, especially albums.

Optical Disc

A classic television set, as people watched before streaming on flatscreens.&nbsp;Depicted in various colors and styles with a screen, knobs, and, on many platforms, rabbit-ear antennae.

Commonly used for television broadcasting as well as various content involving screens, from watching <a href="/movie-camera/">movies</a> to playing <a href="/video-game/">video games</a>.

Google&rsquo;s design <a href="/google/android-8.0/television/">previously</a> featured&nbsp;a more modern-looking orange TV.&nbsp;Apple&rsquo;s <a href="/apple/iphone-os-2.2/television/">first design</a> was yellow, while&nbsp;Microsoft&rsquo;s <a href="/microsoft/windows-10/television/">previous design</a> was a flatscreen.

Television

The front page of a newspaper, as people once read the news before the internet. Commonly used for various content concerning news, media, and journalism as well as personal news.

Most platforms depict a nondescript masthead, images, and columns of text. Apple&rsquo;s newspaper is called The Apple Times, featuring a logo based on its&nbsp;<a href="/eagle/">🦅 Eagle</a> and a picture of its <a href="/volcano/">🌋 Volcano</a>. Facebook&rsquo;s is called Daily Feed, with a headline &ldquo;El Capitan&rdquo; and picture of that famous <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_Capitan">rock formation in Yosemite National Park</a>. WhatsApp&rsquo;s paper reads Daily News with a picture of a <a href="/world-map/">map</a>.

A newspaper rolled up and bound, as for delivery to a house. Generally positioned at a 45&deg; angle. Commonly used for various content concerning news, media, and journalism&nbsp;as well as personal news.

Rolled-Up Newspaper

A dish antenna, as used to send or receive information to or from a communication <a href="/satellite/">satellite</a>&mdash;or <a href="/alien/">👽 Extraterrestrial Life</a>. Generally depicted as a mounted, metal dish with its antenna positioned at 45&deg; to the upper right.

Commonly used to represent satellite <a href="/television/">television</a>, <a href="/radio/">radio</a>, and internet, as well as broadcasting, streaming, cellular, and wireless services or technologies. May also represent various concepts of signals and transmission.

Several platforms, including Microsoft and Twitter, feature curved, radiating lines, as if transmitting data.

The Unicode Consortium approved the following characters as part of <a href="http://www.unicode.org/versions/Unicode7.0.0/">Unicode 7.0</a>, released on June 16, 2014.&nbsp;Support for these emoji characters rely on updates from platform vendors such as Apple, Google, and Microsoft.

Initially, 250&nbsp;new characters in Unicode 7.0 were approved for emoji presentation, however this was later reduced to 103 Standard Additions which are listed below. The other characters remain part of Unicode, but are not recommended&nbsp;to be included as emojis.

The exception to this was the <a href="/left-speech-bubble/" title="🗨 Left Speech Bubble">Left Speech Bubble</a>, and as such wasn&#39;t initially specified on other platforms as an emoji. A later-accepted&nbsp;<a href="http://blog.emojipedia.org/diverse-spy-proposal/">proposal</a>&nbsp;updated this.
