Spouting Whale

A whale, the massive marine mammal. Generally depicted as a light-blue whale in full profile facing left, with its tail curving down towards is huge mouth. Shown with a white, textured underside, as a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humpback_whale">humpback</a> or&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_whale">blue whale</a>.

Apple and Google&#39;s whales have slightly open mouths, revealing <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baleen">baleen</a>.

Whale

A dolphin, a sleek marine mammal known to be social and intelligent. Generally depicted as a light-blue dolphin with a white belly in full profile facing left, its short snout curving down to a prominent dorsal fin and tail, as a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bottlenose_dolphin">bottlenose</a> dolphin leaping in the air.

Tropical Fish

A blowfish (<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetraodontidae">puffer</a>), which puffs up and becomes spiky when alarmed. Depicted as an orange or brown blowfish in full profile facing left, with small fins, a white underside, and a round, spiky body, as if inflated.

Called <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fugu">fugu</a> in Japan, where it&rsquo;s consumed as a delicacy.

Blowfish

An octopus, a sea animal with eight legs, known to change color and release&nbsp;ink. Generally depicted as a pink or orange octopus facing forward, with a large, round head, prominent eyes, and its tentacle-like arms raised at its sides. Platforms vary in the number of arms shown, ranging from four to the full eight, with several designs featuring suckers on them.

Twitter&rsquo;s octopus is purple. Apple&rsquo;s has a friendly, cartoon-styled appearance. <a href="/google/android-7.0/octopus/">Google</a> and <a href="/samsung/experience-9.0/octopus/">Samsung&rsquo;s</a> octopuses previously looked surprised, while <a href="/microsoft/windows-10/octopus/">Microsoft&#39;s</a>&nbsp;suggested an <a href="/alien-monster/">👾 Alien Monster</a>.

Octopus

A seashell, as found at the <a href="/beach-with-umbrella/">beach</a>. Generally depicted as an empty, spiraling, white seashell, as grown by a sea <a href="/snail/">snail</a> or home to a hermit crab. Positioned at various angles across platforms.

Often used for various content concerning beaches, ocean and ocean life, and summer fun.

Apple&rsquo;s design <a href="/apple/ios-4.0/spiral-shell/">previously</a> resembled a clam shell, <a href="/microsoft/windows-10/spiral-shell/">Microsoft&rsquo;s</a> a snail shell. <a href="/google/android-7.0/spiral-shell/">Google&rsquo;s</a> was previously blue.

Spiral Shell

A crab, a squat crustacean with pincers. Depicted as a reddish-orange crab (as cooked) shown from above, with a round, shelled body, shorted, tentacle-like eyes, and ten legs, the top two of which are large pincers.

May be used to represent crab as food or metaphorical senses of crab (e.g., crabby). Often used to represent <a href="/cancer/">♋ Cancer</a>, the Crab, in the Western zodiac.

Not to be confused with <a href="/lobster/">🦞 Lobster</a>.

Facebook&rsquo;s pincers have black tips.

Crab

A lobster, a large crustacean with a prominent tail and pincers. Depicted as a reddish-orange lobster (as cooked) from above, with a long body and tail, short, tentacle-like eyes, and ten legs, the top of which are very large pincers.

Often used to represent lobster as food as well as in connection to the US state of Maine.

In its release year of 2018, Emojipedia&rsquo;s original sample image was criticized as anatomically incorrect but was shortly after <a href="http://blog.emojipedia.org/skateboard-dna-and-lobster-updated/">resolved</a>. That year, the transgender community <a href="https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/trans-activists-lobster-emoji-flag-charlie-craggs-unicode-nail-it-a8474476.html">embraced</a> the lobster as a symbol for their efforts for <a href="/transgender-flag/">Transgender Flag</a>&nbsp;emoji.

Samsung, WhatsApp, and Facebook&rsquo;s lobsters are depicted at an angle.

Lobster

A shrimp (prawn), a small crustacean with a long tail. Generally depicted as a reddish-orange shrimp (as cooked) in full profile facing left, with tiny eyes, many limbs, and its long antennae curling back as its long tail curls in.

May be consumed in the form of <a href="/fried-shrimp/">🍤 Fried Shrimp</a> or <a href="/shallow-pan-of-food/">🥘 Shallow Pan of Food</a>. Often used to represent seafood.

The antennae of Apple&rsquo;s shrimp curls under its body. The body of Facebook&rsquo;s shrimp is straight. <a href="/google/android-7.0/shrimp/">Google</a> and <a href="/samsung/experience-9.0/shrimp/">Samsung&rsquo;s</a> shrimp previously faced right.

Shrimp

A squid, an octopus-like sea animal with ten arms. Generally depicted as a pinkish-orange <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giant_squid">giant squid</a>, facing forward or angled to the left, with a slender, arrow-like body, small eyes, and two, long arms raised up at its sides. Platforms generally depict six arms.

Occasionally used to represent squid as a food item. Not to be confused with <a href="/octopus/">🐙 Octopus</a>, though their applications may overlap.

Microsoft, WhatsApp&nbsp;and Twitter&rsquo;s squid designs&nbsp;are facing forward, as was a previous <a href="/google/android-8.0/squid/">Google</a>&nbsp;design. Samsung&rsquo;s squid was <a href="/samsung/experience-9.0/squid/">previously</a> gray.

Squid

Half of an opened oyster shell with gray, pink, or orange flesh inside. Many platforms also include a pearl in the shell.

Oyster

A beach showing sand, and an umbrella for protection from the <a href="/sun/" title=" ☀️ Black Sun With Rays">sun</a>.

A wave of water, as breaks at the beach. Depicted as a blue wave with a foamy, white crest, curling to the right.

May be used to represent water in general, various bodies of water like oceans, and water activities, such as&nbsp;<a href="/person-swimming/">swimming</a>, <a href="/person-surfing/">surfing</a>, and <a href="/sailboat/">sailing</a>. May also&nbsp;be used to represent metaphorical waves.

Apple&rsquo;s design resembles the iconic wave in&nbsp;Japanese artist Hokusai&rsquo;s famous woodblock print, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Great_Wave_off_Kanagawa">The Great Wave off Kanagawa</a>&nbsp;(ca. 1830).
